While stuttering has been shown to have a genetic basis, the specific genes involved in the disorder have remained largely unknown. Previous research has identified only four genes associated with stuttering, a low number compared to other neurodevelopmental conditions. However, a new study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Melbourne and 17 international institutions has made a breakthrough in understanding the genetic architecture of stuttering.

Approximately 8% of children have a communication or speech and language disorder.1 During the COVID-19 pandemic, lifestyle changes affected the way children live and communicate, including stay-at-home measures, decreases in preschool attendance, and in-person preschool options.2 A study3 in Uruguay found motor and cognitive losses for children during the pandemic compared to a control population. This study was conducted to assess whether there was a change in first-time speech delay diagnoses among US children before and after the pandemic.

Young children who spend about 12 hours a week reading for pleasure tend to do better on cognitive tests and have better mental health when they are adolescents than those who have not developed this reading habit, according to research published in the journal Psychological Medicine.
The findings were based on data on 10,243 young adolescents, including an array of test results, clinical assessments and brain scans as well as information provided by the parents, caregivers and teachers.
